Splitting the bill and paying in Korea
Ask before you order.

Here’s what to know.
Agree on the bill before ordering, especially when meeting someone for the first time. Ask the venue whether it can take separate payments. If one person pays, agree how to settle up without assuming a visitor can use a Korean bank transfer. Treating someone is a choice, not a rule based on age or nationality.
Before you go
- Agree on splitting or treating before ordering.
- Ask whether separate card payments are possible.
- Use cash for settling up if bank transfers won’t work.
What is the easiest way to avoid an awkward bill?
Say what you prefer while the plan is still simple: “Shall we each pay for our own?” or “Want to split this?” For shared food, agree whether to divide the total equally or by what each person ordered. A clear agreement works better than guessing what a local custom requires.

Can the restaurant split card payments?
Ask before ordering. A venue may be able to divide the total across cards, but its till, staffing and house policy can affect what it will do. Separate bills by dish and several payments toward one bill are different requests.
- 따로 계산할 수 있어요? — ttaro gyesanhal su isseoyo? — Can we pay separately?
- Tell staff the amounts clearly if you are dividing one total.
- Keep the receipt until everyone has settled up.

What if one person pays for everyone?
Agree on a practical way to repay that person. Cash can be simple for a visitor. A payment or transfer app only helps if both people can use it; check fees and availability in the app rather than assuming a transfer will be instant or free. Never share login details to make a payment work.

Does the older person or the local have to pay?
Do not treat age, gender or nationality as an obligation. If someone offers to treat you, you can accept, decline politely or offer the next coffee. For a local/seoul social meetup, travelers do not pay the local a guiding fee; agree separately on each person’s food and drink.
Good questions.
Is it rude to ask to split a bill in Seoul?
A polite, early conversation is a practical approach. Explain your preference before ordering, then check what the venue can support. The people at your table matter more than a blanket rule.
Can I repay someone using a Korean banking app?
Only if you have access to a supported account or service. Visitors should not assume that installing an app is enough. Agree on another payment method before someone covers the whole bill.
Should I cover my local friend’s meal?
That is up to both of you. There is no local/seoul requirement to buy someone a meal. Agree on costs beforehand and avoid interpreting a friendly invitation as an automatic promise to pay.
